Leading prediction market Polymarket was blacklisted by Romania’s National Office for Gambling for operating without a license in the country. The regulator clarified that any betting on future results, whether in fiat or crypto, must be licensed. Polymarket’s definition of “counterparty betting” was a concern, especially during Romanian elections where markets generated millions in volume. The platform faced scrutiny in France last year and was fined in the US in 2022 but resumed activities after acquiring QCX. Despite controversies, Polymarket received a $2 billion investment from Intercontinental Exchange, valuing the firm at around $9 billion.
