Hyundai Workers In Alabama Join UAW Amid Unionization Drive

From Nasdaq:

Workers at the Hyundai Motor Co. plant in Alabama have unionized with the United Auto Workers (UAW), with 30% of the workforce joining the union. The workers cited poor working conditions, inadequate compensation, and management’s alleged anti-union tactics as driving forces behind their decision.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has criticized the unionization efforts, characterizing them as the work of “out-of-state special interest groups”. The UAW’s success in the Southeastern U.S. follows its victory in a simultaneous strike against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis last year, resulting in wage increases and workplace reforms.

UAW’s success at the Alabama Hyundai plant comes amidst a broader campaign to expand its influence in the Southeastern U.S., following the victory in a simultaneous strike against the Big Three automakers last year. Workers at Honda, Hyundai, and Volkswagen have filed charges against management for illegally union-busting as workers organized to join the UAW.
