Canada’s Class I railroads, including Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National (CN), are opposing the Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern mega-merger, citing concerns about reduced customer options and increased costs. The merging railroads plan to file a joint merger application with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) by December. CPKC and CN stress cooperation over consolidation. CPKC CEO Keith Creel anticipates a lengthy review process and doubts the merger will enhance railroad competition. Both CPKC and CN plan to pursue partnership opportunities to achieve merger-like benefits if the UP-NS merger is approved.
