TSX Recovers From Early Lows, Ends Just Marginally Down

The Canadian market saw a sharp drop, recovered slightly, then faltered again due to U.S. jobs data. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended the session with a loss of 0.16%. Energy and gold stocks fell, while Shopify Inc, Aritzia Inc, and goeasy rallied. In the U.S., stocks ended higher after the release of positive jobs data, with non-farm payroll employment increasing by 353,000 jobs in January, much higher than economist estimates.
The non-farm payroll employment in the U.S. spiked by 353,000 jobs in January, much higher than the expected increase of 180,000 jobs. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.7%, contrary to economists’ expectations of a slight increase to 3.8%.
