Elon Musk’s X taps small D.C. law firm for free-speech battles

From Nasdaq:

Elon Musk pledged to cover legal costs for X users facing reprisals for their posts, bringing a high-profile case to small law firm Schaerr Jaffe, known for constitutional legal battles. The firm filed a wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit against Disney on actor Gina Carano’s behalf. Musk’s X was paying Carano’s legal bills and vowed legal support for anyone “discriminated against by Disney or its subsidiaries.”

Carano claims she was fired from Disney’s “The Mandalorian” for voicing conservative opinions on social media. X confirmed they were covering her legal costs and promised that any settlement or damages award would go to her. The firm also represented a University of Illinois student who faced disciplinary action for X posts, though the case was later dropped. Schaerr Jaffe has represented conservative clients, such as Republican U.S. senators and gun rights groups, as well as non-conservative clients, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP.

Gene Schaerr co-founded the firm, which has taken on a range of cases and clients, in 2014. He left a larger law firm to continue representing his home state of Utah in its efforts to maintain a since-overturned ban on same-sex marriage.
