NVIDIA and RIKEN are collaborating on two new supercomputers in Japan powered by NVIDIA GB200 systems, with a total of 2,140 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. One system focuses on AI for science, while the other is dedicated to quantum computing, advancing research in various fields such as life sciences, materials science, and climate forecasting.
RIKEN is integrating NVIDIA GB200 NVL4 systems with two new supercomputers in Japan, one for AI for science and the other for quantum computing. The systems will feature a total of 2,140 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, supporting Japan’s AI strategy and expanding infrastructure for leadership in science and technology.
The first system will deploy 1,600 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs interconnected by NVIDIA Quantum-X800 InfiniBand networking for AI research in life sciences, materials science, and more. The second system, for quantum computing, will feature 540 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs to accelerate research in quantum algorithms and hybrid simulation.
NVIDIA and RIKEN’s collaboration aims to boost Japan’s scientific innovation in AI, quantum computing, and high-performance computing. The partnership will create unified platforms for various research fields, accelerating discoveries and breakthroughs in both basic sciences and industrial applications.
The FugakuNEXT system, a collaboration between Fujitsu and NVIDIA, will feature FUJITSU-MONAKA-X CPUs paired with NVIDIA technologies using NVIDIA NVLink Fusion. Expected to deliver 100x greater application performance, FugakuNEXT will integrate production-level quantum computers in the future.
NVIDIA is developing software with RIKEN to utilize NVIDIA Tensor Core GPU performance for accelerating scientific computing. RIKEN also plans to leverage NVIDIA CUDA-X to enhance HPC applications with GPU platforms, advancing AI for science and quantum computing initiatives in Japan.
The two new RIKEN supercomputers will be operational by spring 2026, while FugakuNEXT is set for operation by 2030. This partnership reflects Japan’s commitment to innovation and NVIDIA’s support in enhancing the country’s computational infrastructure and capabilities in supercomputing and AI for science.
