Delta to open new tier of premium airport lounges this year

From NBCUniversal:

Delta Air Lines is launching a new tier of exclusive airport lounges to cater to high-spending travelers. The first “premium” lounge is set to open in June at New York’s JFK International Airport, covering 38,000 square feet, with additional high-end lounges planned for Boston and Los Angeles. Delta is moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach for its airport travelers, joining United Airlines and American Airlines in offering exclusive lounges.

Delta’s popular Sky Clubs, used by travelers with memberships, airline status, credit card benefits, or flying in a premium cabin, are expanding. The new strategy reflects Delta’s focus on the increasing importance of travelers flying in premium seats. Last year, premium revenue from business class or premium economy tickets grew 26% to $19.1 billion, while main cabin ticket sales rose 20% to $24.5 billion. Delta did not disclose entry requirements for the new lounges, but stated the JFK location will have a full-service restaurant and wellness areas. The airline also plans to open standard Sky Clubs in Charlotte and a new location in Seattle later this year, and expand clubs in Miami and New York’s LaGuardia.
