The Gustav Klimt painting “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” sold at Sotheby’s for $236.4 million, becoming the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction, boosting the high-end art market after a decline. The buyer remains anonymous, but the sale signals a strong art market with sales expected to exceed $1.4 billion.
This week’s art auctions are expected to top $2 billion, more than double last year’s total, due to renewed optimism among collectors and rare masterpieces coming to market. Maurizio Cattelan’s solid gold toilet sculpture “America” sold for $12.1 million at Sotheby’s, part of Leonard Lauder’s collection that includes other Klimt works.
Christie’s sales have reached over $747 million, with notable sales including a Mark Rothko painting for $62.2 million and a Picasso for $45.5 million. The art market is thriving this week with more sales to come at Phillips, following the success at Sotheby’s and Christie’s auctions.
