Y Combinator Gerry Tan on San Francisco crime: Tupac lyrics, ‘gouging out its own eyes’
From Fortune:
Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan went online in January and made a death wish against San Francisco politicians, aimed at members of the city’s Board of Supervisors. After deleting his posts and apologizing, Tan continues to be vocal about his concerns toward urban crime in the city and is part of a group that is focused on moving the city’s politics in a moderate direction.
Tan is part of a larger trend of wealthy tech executives speaking out against urban issues in San Francisco. Other tech executives have poured money into an effort to start a new city in nearby Solano County and past efforts have involved backing the recall of San Francisco’s progressive district attorney.
City politicians and residents alike object to the influence of tech industry funding in local politics and have received threatening letters, prompting some to file police reports. Supervisor Dean Preston has been taken particular aim at by Tan, who has made substantial donations to a political action committee called “Dump Dean.”
Mayor London Breed has also been called out from by Tan, who has expressed support for more tech growth in San Francisco and has called for more entrepreneurs to become involved in city politics.
