HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) secures a $1.456bn shipbuilding contract with HMM for eight 13,400 TEU container vessels. Construction to be split between HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho. Deliveries expected until first half of 2029.

The container ships will feature LNG dual-fuel engines and a larger fuel tank for improved efficiency. HD KSOE’s total orders for container ships this year now stand at 69 vessels with a total capacity of 720,000 TEU, the highest volume among South Korean shipbuilders.

HD Hyundai implements HiNAS Control system on newbuilds since 2023, developed in partnership with Avikus. The autonomous navigation system provides route recommendations, automatic tracking, collision avoidance, and has led to a 15% reduction in carbon emissions and fuel efficiency increase.

An HD Hyundai representative highlights the company’s technological capabilities and commitment to eco-friendly and high-efficiency vessels. The contract follows HMM’s recent order for twelve 13,000 TEU container ships and two large crude carriers, to be built by HD Hyundai Heavy and Hanwha Ocean.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries celebrates the delivery of its 5,000th ship as the company continues to lead in technological competitiveness and decarbonisation efforts in the shipbuilding and shipping industries.
