Amazon has revived its satellite project in low Earth orbit, now named Amazon Leo, to launch a global broadband network. With 150+ satellites in orbit and testing underway, they unveiled hardware and services for businesses, starting an enterprise preview program for selected customers before a full launch next year.
Amazon Leo aims to offer high-speed internet to industries beyond standard networks, focusing on energy, manufacturing, transportation, media, and government sectors. VP Chris Weber sees this as a big opportunity for businesses operating in challenging conditions.
A standout feature is the Leo Ultra terminal, boasting download speeds up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 400 Mbps, the fastest in its class. It is durable in extreme weather, powered by custom Amazon silicon for low-latency tasks like video calls and cloud computing.
Amazon Leo also offers secure networking solutions like Direct to AWS for direct cloud connections and Private Network Interconnects for data center links. Early partners include JetBlue, Hunt Energy Network, Vanu Inc., Connected Farms, and Crane Worldwide Logistics, receiving Leo Pro and Leo Ultra terminals for testing.
