The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has named Tommaso Mancini-Griffoli, a prominent economist in digital money, as the next head of the BIS Innovation Hub from March 2026. He will focus on exploring technological solutions for central banks, including CBDCs and tokenized assets.
Mancini-Griffoli, currently with the IMF, advocates for regulated digital money models and warns against unregulated stablecoins. He believes a hybrid public-private CBDC model is the way forward, blending private innovation with public safety and systemic stability.
The BIS Innovation Hub is expanding its influence with blockchain settlement systems and digital currency prototypes. Mancini-Griffoli supports tokenized money backed by central bank reserves and warns of risks associated with poorly regulated stablecoins.
The Hub is running high-profile experiments like mBridge, Agora, and Project Nexus to reimagine traditional finance with blockchain-inspired architecture. Mancini-Griffoli is expected to accelerate initiatives in cross-border payments, tokenized deposits, and interoperable CBDCs under his leadership.
