Ethereum’s mainnet block gas limit hits 60 million, the highest in four years. This allows more work per block, easing congestion and increasing network activity. Over 513,000 validators signal for the limit increase, boosting Ethereum’s effective block size and throughput. The effort to scale Ethereum began in March 2024, with developers launching the “Pump The Gas” initiative to reduce transaction fees. Validators started signaling for an increase in gas limits in December 2024, ahead of the Fusaka network upgrade on Dec. 3. Ethereum community leaders see the 60 million gas limit as just the beginning of expanding the network’s execution capacity. Vitalik Buterin expects continued growth with targeted scaling and smarter pricing to ensure safe expansion without new issues.
