Economist Mohamed El-Erian warned that Bitcoin is influenced by short-term “tourist” investors, evident in heavy outflows from the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. El-Erian noted significant price declines linked to these investors exiting the market, affecting the world’s largest cryptocurrency-focused investment vehicle with $2.27 billion outflows in November.

Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas disputed a CNBC report cited by El-Erian, suggesting the data was inaccurate or intentionally altered to cause concern. Balchunas emphasized that November outflows were minimal, representing less than 3% of the fund’s total assets under management, downplaying the significance of the situation.

Following a sharp correction in the Bitcoin market, El-Erian observed a flight of speculative “tourist” investors, leading to a crash from all-time highs to $81,000. Spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively saw $3.57 billion in outflows this month, reflecting the impact of the recent downturn on the cryptocurrency market.

El-Erian’s past “behavioral mistakes” with Bitcoin, as revealed in a CNBC interview, further underscored the challenges of navigating the cryptocurrency landscape. Acknowledging errors in timing, El-Erian admitted to buying Bitcoin during the “crypto winter” of 2018 but selling prematurely, highlighting the complexities of digital asset investments.
