In early trading, Merck is the top performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, up 1.9% with a year-to-date gain of 3.4%. Meanwhile, Microsoft is the worst performer, down 2.5% today but up 13.4% year-to-date. Caterpillar is down 1.7% and Verizon Communications is up 1.6% in trading.
