US House forms AI task force as legislative push stalls
From Nasdaq:
The U.S. House of Representatives is forming a bipartisan task force to explore potential legislation addressing artificial intelligence concerns as efforts in Congress have stalled. Generative AI has raised fears of job obsolescence, election interference, and catastrophic effects, prompting the need for guardrails to protect the nation.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the task force’s goal of producing a comprehensive report, considering adequate guardrails against current and emerging threats from artificial intelligence. The task force will develop guiding principles, recommendations, and bipartisan policy proposals in consultation with Congressional committees.
President Joe Biden’s executive order in October and the Commerce Department’s proposal in January aim to mitigate AI risks. The 24-member task force, led by Representative Jay Obernolte and Democratic co-chair Ted Lieu, will focus on regulatory standards and Congressional actions to protect consumers and support AI innovation benefiting society.
Leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, joined a new U.S. consortium to support safe AI deployment. The rise of artificial intelligence presents unique challenges, and guardrails must be in place to protect the American people. The Federal Communications Commission declared calls made with AI-generated voices as illegal.
