American Airlines announced that customers on basic economy fares will no longer earn frequent flyer miles or points towards elite status starting December 17, 2025. Elite loyalty members can still be eligible for first-class upgrades on domestic flights. This move comes as American Airlines aims to attract customers willing to spend more to fly.

The decision by American Airlines follows a similar policy by Delta Air Lines, where travelers on basic economy tickets do not receive SkyMiles. United Airlines allows MileagePlus members to earn miles on basic economy tickets, but customers are not allowed to bring a carry-on bag on most flights. Southwest Airlines also recently introduced basic fares with restrictions.
