UK posts record budget surplus in January
From CNBC:
The UK recorded a £16.7 billion net budget surplus in January, the highest on record. Self-assessed income and capital gains tax receipts were £33 billion, down £1.8 billion from last year. Total government tax receipts reached a record £90.8 billion, up £2.9 billion from January 2023. Public debt was around 96.5% of annual GDP, reaching levels last seen in the early 1960s.
The surplus data comes ahead of Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt’s Spring Budget on March 6. With Labour Party leading in polls, there’s speculation about potential tax cuts in the budget. However, experts suggest that the state of the nation’s finances may limit tax cut possibilities, potentially leading to cuts in public services.
