Bulgarian energy company Blue Bird Energy and European project developer SGE signed a letter of intent for a joint venture to build up to six small modular reactors (SMRs) in Bulgaria. The 300-MW units from GE Vernova Hitachi will provide power for the industrial sector and district heating decarbonization. The JV will handle site selection, licensing, construction, funding, and operation.

SGE CEO Rafał Kasprow sees the partnership as strengthening the European SMR development platform and providing affordable energy for Bulgaria. Blue Bird Energy’s chairman Kalin Peshov is excited to work with GE Vernova Hitachi and SGE to ensure Bulgaria’s long-term energy supply. SGE is a leading European SMR developer with projects in multiple countries, while Blue Bird Energy is backed by prominent Bulgarian companies GBS and Asarel-Medet JSC.
