Social Security benefits may be subject to taxes, but nine states do not tax these benefits: Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia. Some states are eliminating this tax, like West Virginia in 2026. Federal taxes still apply based on your combined income, which includes AGI and nontaxable interest.
