Passengers paid about $6.8 billion in total baggage fees in 2022, according to the Bureau of Transportation.

To avoid or reduce checked bag fees, consider flying with certain airlines that still offer free checked bags, such as Southwest. Traveling light with only a personal item and/or carry-on bag can also help avoid these fees. Adding bags early during the booking process can save money, while purchasing a higher-tier ticket may include baggage allowance.

Combining suitcases or leveraging space within a car-seat carrier for families with small kids can help reduce checked bag fees. Passengers should also consider upgrading their fare to include baggage allowance or joining a frequent flier program for perks like free checked bags. Consider purchasing a luggage scale, investing in ultralight luggage, and reading the fine print on ticket details to avoid additional fees.
