In the new year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index both achieved fresh record closes, setting a strong start for investors. Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White compiled a list of the best 25 stocks to own in the first quarter to maintain this momentum.

Steel Dynamics Inc (STLD) may not be at the top of the list, but it has historically shown the largest percentage gains in the first quarter. With eight out of the last 10 years ending with an average 16.6% increase, STLD outperforms competitor Nucor (NUE).

Despite a recent decline of 2.3% to $168.63, STLD’s shares rejected a joint buyout offer and still carry a 41.3% year-over-year gain. The stock remains close to its record high of $178.36 on Dec. 23, with the 40-day moving average positioned to limit further losses.

Options traders are overwhelmingly bullish on the steel stock, evident in STLD’s 50-day call/put volume ratio of 3.25, ranking higher than 79% of annual readings. Additionally, near-term option traders anticipate low volatility based on the stock’s Schaeffer’s Volatility Index (SVI) of 39%.
