Google-backed satellite to track global oil industry methane emissions

From Nasdaq.:

A new satellite backed by Google and the Environmental Defense Fund will launch to pinpoint methane emissions from the oil and gas industry from space, joining other spacecraft fighting climate change.

MethaneSAT will offer more detailed emissions data than existing trackers, holding over 50 oil and gas companies accountable for their pledges to reduce methane emissions and gas flaring.

Developed with partners like Harvard University, MethaneSAT’s data will be publicly available later this year, with Google Cloud processing the information to help combat the potent greenhouse gas emissions.

Oil industry group API cautioned against using third-party emissions data for regulation without verification, stressing the importance of environmental regulators in validating the information provided by the satellite.

This initiative represents a step forward in the global effort to tackle methane emissions and combat climate change, with data transparency playing a key role in holding industries accountable for their environmental impact.
