General Motors plans to move production of the Buick Envision SUV from China to the U.S. for domestic sales starting in 2028. The next-generation vehicle will be built at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, in response to pressure to onshore production amid growing U.S.-China tensions.
The move is part of GM’s efforts to strengthen its domestic manufacturing footprint and support U.S. jobs. The Buick compact SUV will join production of the Chevrolet Equinox at the Kansas factory in 2027. U.S. sales of the Envision have exceeded 40,000 units annually, accounting for a significant portion of Buick’s sales.
GM’s decision to produce the compact Buick SUV in the U.S. was confirmed in an emailed statement, following a report by Reuters. The move comes as part of a broader strategy to invest in domestic manufacturing and align with President Donald Trump’s push to bring production back to the U.S. amid trade tensions with China.
