As Big Tech scrambles to meet EU rules, investigations seen as likely

From Nasdaq:

Major tech companies such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and TikTok owner ByteDance have been rushing to comply with new EU tech regulations set to take effect on Thursday. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) aims to regulate Big Tech and could reshape the global tech industry.

Concerns have been raised regarding potential non-compliance by a few of these tech giants, which could lead to fines of up to 10% of their global turnover if they fail to meet the DMA deadline. Apple faces significant impact, with requirements to open up its ecosystem and new fees drawing scrutiny.

Alphabet’s Google, with the most core platform services subject to DMA, also faces potential investigation. The company’s mandatory search results overhaul may benefit aggregators but cause friction with other businesses losing online traffic. Meta’s data sharing practices and Microsoft, Amazon, and ByteDance may face scrutiny as well.

EU regulators are likely to focus on one or two cases initially, with pressure for investigation also coming from the tech companies themselves. The new DMA regulations have a quicker timeline for enforcement compared to antitrust cases, with findings expected within a year.
