ECB keeps rates steady, possible cut in June due to revised inflation outlook
From Morningstar:
1. The European Central Bank (ECB) decided to keep its key interest rates steady, but a possible rate cut in June is now anticipated due to a revised inflation outlook. This led to higher European equity markets and a weaker euro against the US dollar.
2. The ECB left the main refinancing operations and interest rates unchanged, at 4.50%, 4.75%, and 4.00% respectively. Two-thirds of economists are now predicting a rate cut in June, even though the ECB did not specify when this may happen.
3. Market strategist Michael Field noted a change in the ECB’s tone regarding inflation, suggesting a rate cut may come in June. Inflation projections for 2024 were revised down, indicating the necessity for a balancing act between inflation and recession risks in the European economy.
4. Lower interest rates could impact European investors, with equity markets expected to rise and bond markets potentially suffering. Decreased cash savings rates may disadvantage savers, but lower consumer debt and mortgage rates could benefit borrowers in the face of a weakening economic outlook in the eurozone.
