Tetra Pak invests €60m in new pilot facility in Lund, Sweden to develop paper-based barrier technology for beverage cartons, replacing aluminum foil with paper, increasing renewable content to 92% and reducing carbon emissions by up to 43%.
The shift to a paper-based barrier aims to simplify material structure, support recycling efforts, and accelerate the transition to sustainable packaging materials for Tetra Pak’s customers.
The pilot plant in Lund will allow customers to test the new barrier solution across various production stages, aligning with Tetra Pak’s plan to invest €100m annually in sustainable packaging technologies until 2030.
Tetra Pak introduced its first aseptic carton with a paper-based barrier in 2023 and recently launched a paper-based barrier for juice cartons in collaboration with García Carrión in Spain.
Tetra Pak’s investment in the Swedish paper barrier is part of a broader green push, with the company aiming to make innovative paper-based barriers more accessible to customers and increase the adoption of sustainable packaging materials.
