Volkswagen’s Traton and PlusAI plan to expand partnership for autonomous trucks in the US and Europe, with Traton providing up to $25m for research and development. The collaboration involves integrating SuperDrive system into factory lines for Scania, MAN, and International vehicles. Plans include public listing and board representation for PlusAI. Final contract terms are still being discussed.

Traton sees autonomous trucking as a key part of its long-term technology roadmap, praising PlusAI’s technical capabilities. The partnership, which began in 2024, focuses on achieving Level 4 autonomous operations. Traton and PlusAI aim to scale output of SuperDrive-equipped vehicles and plan routes in the US, with future entry into European markets. Traton could receive private warrants tied to deployment revenue targets.

The funding will support technical integration, safety case development, and commercialization in the US and Europe, with potential for additional investment based on milestones. PlusAI CEO David Liu highlights the progress made in moving autonomy from labs to real-world operations. The expanded partnership aims to accelerate towards large-scale commercial deployment.
