Google will pay $135 million to settle a class action lawsuit by smartphone users who accused the company of collecting their cellular data without permission through the Android operating system. The settlement, pending court approval, covers users since November 2017. Google denied wrongdoing but agreed to not transfer data without user consent and make it easier to stop transfers. The settlement also includes disclosures in Google Play terms of service. The plaintiffs’ lawyers may seek up to $39.8 million in legal fees. The lawsuit, which began in 2020, was scheduled for trial in August.
