Household net worth in the US hit a record $156.2 trillion in 2023, thanks to a stellar year for the stock market. The value of stocks held by Americans climbed by $7.8 trillion, propelling total yearly net worth up 8% to a historic high. The fourth quarter alone saw wealth soar $4.8 trillion, erasing a dip in the third quarter. This spike was driven by a year-end rally and hopes of the Fed easing monetary policy. The stock market’s rally has continued into 2024, with the S&P 500 up over 8% year-to-date, driven by enthusiasm around artificial intelligence and expectations of lower interest rates.
