Sam Altman returns to OpenAI board with new directors after investigation

From Manorama Online:

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, will return to the board along with three new directors. An investigation by WilmerHale into Altman’s firing concluded, leading to new governance rules. Microsoft, a key backer, supported Altman’s leadership after the reversal of his ouster.

New directors include Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo. The investigation found Altman’s dismissal stemmed from a breakdown in board trust rather than financial or product concerns. OpenAI is adopting new corporate guidelines and a whistleblower hotline to enhance governance.

The board’s lack of transparency following Altman’s firing sparked speculation about misconduct and technological risks. Altman’s reinstatement after employee backlash and resignations forced discussions on governance. A reconstituted board was announced with Taylor as chairman, excluding Altman.
