Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposes a new creator token model combining DAOs with prediction market mechanics to incentivize high-quality content creation. Content creators could launch tokens and apply to curated creator DAOs where members decide which content to accept, while speculators profit by predicting which creators or content will be admitted.

Buterin notes that existing creator token platforms prioritize mass content creation over quality, exacerbated by AI-generated content. He suggests focusing on niches to win specific audiences, such as short-form video or long-form writing, catering to specific countries or political audiences. DAOs should aim to have a group larger than one creator but small enough for tractable internal governance.

Top creator coins on platforms like BitClout and Zora are led by celebrities, hindering smaller creators. Friend.tech, a SocialFi app on Ethereum layer-2 Base, allowed creators to share content in private chatrooms accessed via tradable keys but faced criticism due to speculation driving key prices. The platform shut down in September 2024 after activity dropped significantly and its native token fell 95% from its high.
