Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has changed his stance on layer-2 scaling solutions, stating that they are no longer the best way to scale Ethereum due to decentralization issues. Instead, he believes that the Ethereum mainnet is now sufficiently scaling, with improvements like gas limit increases and upcoming native rollups. Buterin suggested layer-2s should pivot to focus on specific niches like privacy and finance.
Buterin’s new approach comes as some Ethereum developers, like Max Resnick and Ryan Sean Adams, advocate for scaling the Ethereum mainnet directly. Buterin emphasized the importance of native rollups in scaling the Ethereum mainnet, especially with the integration of zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) proofs. Traditional rollups are built on top of Ethereum, while native rollups are directly integrated into Ethereum, verified by Ethereum validators.
In December, Ethereum developers discussed raising the gas limit to 80 million after implementing a hard fork, which would boost the number of transactions per block and potentially lower fees. The goal is to achieve 10,000 transactions per second on the Ethereum mainnet in the next 10 years, a significant increase from the current 15-30 TPS. This shift in scaling strategy marks a pivotal moment for Ethereum’s future growth and development.
