Online marketplaces can do more to stop crime

Sophisticated organized retail crime rings are targeting retailers like Ulta Beauty, T.J. Maxx, and Walgreens, stealing and reselling items. Ulta Beauty CEO Dave Kimbell blames e-commerce sites for providing a platform for reselling stolen goods. A California couple was charged with organized retail theft, with $387,000 in suspected stolen items found in their mansion.
Ulta Beauty aims to lock up all fragrances due to the ease of reselling high-value items. Retail executives are concerned about the increase in violence associated with theft, with 81% reporting a rise in violence. Ulta CEO Kimbell is worried about how the rise in crime affects the company’s 50,000 employees across 1,400 stores nationwide.
