SpaceX preparing for third test flight of Starship rocket to achieve successful flight.
From CNBC:
SpaceX is preparing for a third test flight of its Starship rocket, with a nearly two-hour launch window starting at 8 a.m. ET. The company aims to push development milestones forward with this launch attempt near Boca Chica, Texas.
With the weather forecasted as “70% favorable,” SpaceX is targeting a liftoff time of 9:25 a.m. ET for the Starship rocket. The company has faced explosive results on previous tests, but the goal is to ultimately achieve a successful flight with this massive vehicle.
The Federal Aviation Administration has cleared SpaceX for a third launch attempt of Starship. If successful, the rocket will reach space, circle the Earth, reenter the atmosphere, and splash down in the Indian Ocean as part of its test flight.
SpaceX’s Starship is intended to be a fully reusable rocket system for transporting cargo and crew beyond Earth. The rocket’s development is crucial for NASA’s Artemis moon program, with SpaceX set to provide a crewed lunar lander using Starship.
Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever launched, stands at 397 feet tall with a 30-foot diameter. Powered by 33 Raptor engines in the Super Heavy booster, it produces 16.7 million pounds of thrust, double that of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket.
SpaceX’s goals for the upcoming flight include demonstrating new capabilities such as opening and closing the spacecraft door in space, transferring fuel during flight in a NASA demonstration, and relighting Starship’s engines while in space. The company aims to surpass previous flight milestones with this test launch.
