Top Websites are blocking Google from using their data for AI training, impacting web traffic

Google launched Google-Extended to let websites block content use for training AI models, which has been affecting web traffic distribution among top websites. Originality.ai data shows 10% top websites use this tool. The NY Times is in a heated AI copyright battle and has enabled Google-Extended blocker to prevent data mining by tech companies. Other websites like CNN, BBC, Yelp, and Business Insider have also implemented Google-Extended.<>
Although Google-Extended has seen some adoption, it’s not as widely used as other AI blockers like OpenAI’s GPTBot, which is on around 32% of the top 1,000 websites. The differing engagement levels of these tools have raised concerns about how they impact search results. Google’s genAI search engine may influence the future of the web in the evolving AI landscape. Axel Springer, BI’s parent company, has a deal with OpenAI to use its reporting for training AI models.
