Dutch chain Kwalitaria partners with Notpla to replace plastic packaging with seaweed-coated trays. The trays are plastic and microplastic-free, compostable at home, and will be introduced in all 160 outlets across the Netherlands. The project aims to test Notpla’s technology in high-volume quick-service restaurant settings.

Conpax will handle logistics for the rollout of the seaweed-coated trays at Kwalitaria outlets. Notpla and 14 European partners secured €4m in Horizon Europe funding to develop home compostable, plastic-free coffee cups. Imperial College London also collaborated with Notpla to introduce seaweed-based packaging to reduce single-use plastic on campus.

The partnership between Kwalitaria and Notpla sets a new benchmark for plastic-free packaging in quick-service restaurants. The aim is to observe how the seaweed-coated trays perform under typical high-volume conditions. The funding secured will further develop disposable coffee cups that are fully compostable and free of plastic coatings.
