Putin wins Russian election in landslide with record turnout, securing new term

President Vladimir Putin won a record post-Soviet landslide in Russia’s election, solidifying his power despite protests and U.S. criticism. With 74.22% voter turnout, Putin secured a new six-year term with 87.8% of the vote. Putin’s opponent Alexei Navalny’s supporters held demonstrations, resulting in at least 74 arrests. Ukraine President Zelenskiy criticized Putin, calling for him to be on trial in The Hague. Western spy chiefs view the election as critical amidst the Ukraine war. The Biden administration is concerned about Putin’s potential further aggression in Ukraine and its implications for China. Voting also took place in Crimea, sparking controversy with Ukraine.
