xAI open sources Grok – The Verge
From Vox Media:
Elon Musk announced xAI would open-source its AI chatbot Grok, available on GitHub, allowing researchers and developers to enhance and compete with rival tech like OpenAI and Meta.
The open release of Grok-1 includes the base model weights and architecture from last October, not fine-tuned for specific applications, according to a company blog post.
Grok AI is being released under the Apache 2.0 license, enabling commercial use but lacking the data used to train it or real-time data connections, with targeted uses for coding generation, creative writing, and answering questions.
After Musk’s purchase of Twitter (now X), he released the code behind its algorithms, openly criticizing companies like OpenAI for not open-sourcing their AI models.
Various companies release open-source or limited open-source AI models to receive feedback for improvement, though widely used models usually have closed or limited open licenses, like Meta’s Llama 2, which charges a fee for customers with restrictions on developer iterations.
