HII Celebrates 2023 Graduates of The Newport News

HII hosted commencement exercises celebrating 133 graduates of the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. The ceremony featured keynote speaker Thomasina Wright, NNS Vice President, and 1986 graduate of The Apprentice School, urging graduates to focus on continuous learning and community involvement. The school, accredited since 1982, conferred its first associate’s degree in applied science maritime technology to Adam Ryan West. Scott Sinowitz received the Homer L. Ferguson Award, recognizing the apprentice with the highest average in academic and craft grades. Graduates completed various programs, including an accelerated skills training program for foremen and military veterans.
The Apprentice School accepts over 200 apprentices annually, offering tuition-free apprenticeships in 19 trades and advanced programs. Partnerships with educational institutions allow students to earn associate and bachelor’s degrees while working full-time.
