Samsung launches AGI business with focus on specialized semiconductors led by former Google AI chip leader

From Digitimes Inc.:

Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of its AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) business. New research organizations will be established, allowing for collaborations with international entities. The head of Samsung’s Device Solutions division announced the establishment of AGI Computing Labs in the US and South Korea.

Dr. Dong-hyuk Woo, a system semiconductors veteran and former Google AI chip division leader, will lead the AGI Computing Lab. The focus will be on developing specialized semiconductors for AGI, particularly in inference, service applications, and large language models (LLMs). Samsung aims to significantly reduce power consumption in running LLMs through improved chip architecture.

Samsung plans to introduce new chip designs from the AGI Computing Lab through rapid iterations to provide performance for growing models while saving power and costs. International collaborations with entities like Meta and Open AI are potential avenues for Samsung’s AGI venture. Discussions with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and potential collaborations with Open AI are underway.
