EXCLUSIVE-Behind the plot to break Nvidia’s grip on AI by targeting software
From Nasdaq:
Nvidia has reached a $2.2 trillion market cap by producing AI chips and developing software that keeps developers tied to their platform, making competition difficult. A coalition of tech companies, including Qualcomm and Google, plans to challenge Nvidia’s dominance with an open-source project called UXL.
The UXL Foundation, backed by companies like Google and Intel, aims to create software that can power various AI accelerator chips, breaking away from Nvidia’s hold. With plans to court cloud and chip companies, UXL wants to address computing challenges and win over developers to its platform while eventually supporting Nvidia hardware.
Venture financiers and corporate funding have put over $4 billion into 93 projects aiming to challenge Nvidia’s AI software dominance. Startups have received over $2 billion this year, and success against Nvidia’s CUDA software will be challenging due to its established developer base and continuous growth.
Nvidia executive Ian Buck stated that they welcome the accelerated innovation in computing. Nvidia shares rose by 0.8% to $950.02 on Monday. Various efforts are underway to challenge Nvidia, with UXL being one of the key initiatives to break Nvidia’s dominance in AI software and chip technology.
