McDonald's and Krispy Kreme partnering to sell doughnuts nationwide by 2026

From CNBC: March 26, 2024

McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme are teaming up, with the doughnut chain’s treats set to be sold at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide by the end of 2026. Krispy Kreme plans to double its distribution to meet demand, making McDonald’s its exclusive fast-food partner in the U.S.

Krispy Kreme currently delivers to 6,800 third-party stores and aims to expand its reach to 13,500 McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. The chain is working on enhancing its distribution network to accommodate the increased demand from McDonald’s as well as other new customers.

McDonald’s started selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts at nine locations a year and a half ago, expanding the pilot to around 160 restaurants in Kentucky later on. Customer demand during the tests exceeded expectations for both chains, prompting the decision to roll out the product nationwide.

McDonald’s customers will soon have access to Krispy Kreme’s original glazed, chocolate iced, and cream-filled doughnuts, with the option to purchase them individually or in packs of six. The doughnuts will be available all day at McDonald’s restaurants.

Krispy Kreme aims to increase its global reach to over 100,000 points of access, up from its prior goal of 75,000 locations, as it seeks to expand its market presence. The chain currently sells its doughnuts in 14,100 stores across 39 countries, but the partnership with McDonald’s should help grow its footprint.

Investor concerns have impacted Krispy Kreme’s stock, which has fallen 20% over the past year, while consumer preferences for cheaper food have benefited McDonald’s, with its stock rising by 2% in the same period. Both companies face challenges but are adapting to changing market dynamics.
