A study by Yale University, King’s College Hospital, and Doctors Without Borders suggests that the diabetes drug Ozempic can be manufactured for less than $5 a month, but Novo Nordisk charges nearly $1,000 per month in the U.S. The study questions high prices of top-selling diabetes treatments, raising concerns for patients.

Researchers found that a month’s supply of Ozempic can be manufactured for 89 cents to $4.73. Novo Nordisk charges $935.77 per month before insurance and rebates. The study suggests that GLP-1s like Ozempic can be produced at much lower costs, enabling wider access to these vital treatments.

Novo Nordisk declined to disclose production costs for Ozempic, citing research and development expenses. They offer savings cards for patients with private insurance to pay as little as $25 for a one to three-month supply of the drug. Research also found the weight loss drug, Wegovy, could be produced for $40 a month, with patient surveys showing most pay under $50 out of pocket for GLP-1 treatments.
