China is playing catch-up in the U.S. AI market dominated by tech giants like OpenAI and Google. The Chinese market is ramping up chip efforts, but still lags behind in foundational large language models.

China is relying on open-source large language models like Meta’s Llama 1 to bridge the gap with U.S. competitors. Despite limitations in AI acceleration due to U.S. chip export restrictions, China is investing in talent and technology to close the divide.

Chinese companies, such as Baidu, are entering the gen AI market with advanced technology like the Ernie Bot chatbot service. While there are no dominant gen AI contenders in China yet, the country boasts significant tech talent and major players like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent investing in AI development.
