Google Agrees To Delete ‘incognito’ Browsing Data Records As Part Of Settlement

Google has agreed to delete billions of users’ browsing history records following a class-action lawsuit alleging data harvesting in Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ mode. The lawsuit represented millions of users between June 2016 and December 2023.

US District Judge declined Google’s motion to dismiss the case, leading to a rescheduled trial date of July 30 in Oakland, California. The settlement does not shield Google from future lawsuits, allowing individuals to seek damages in state courts across the US. Attorney David Boies called it a step towards holding tech companies accountable.

Plaintiffs claimed Google violated federal wiretapping and privacy laws by tracking user data without consent. The estimated $5-7.8 billion settlement is based on potential ad revenue from the collected information. While the lawsuit didn’t secure financial damages as a class action, individual lawsuits have been filed. The settlement sets a precedent for tech companies on user data and privacy issues.
