OpenAI has introduced Voice Engine, an AI tool that creates a simulated version of a person’s voice from a short clip. Voice Engine has various applications, including aiding children in reading, translating content, and generating voices for individuals who cannot speak. However, public release is pending to address potential misuse risks.

Voice Engine is part of OpenAI’s suite of AI tools, like DALL-E and ChatGPT, used for image creation and natural conversation, respectively. While some tools are available to the public, Voice Engine and Sora, a video generation tool, are only accessible to select groups for testing. Concerns have been raised about potential misuse of AI-generated voices for criminal activities like fraud.

In January, an estimated 5,000 to 25,000 robocalls in New Hampshire discouraged voters from participating in the state’s presidential primary, utilizing AI-generated voices similar to those produced by Voice Engine. This incident highlights the potential risks of AI exploitation in influencing public behaviors such as voting. OpenAI is cautious about the misuse of synthesized voices for fraudulent activities.
