Amazon is replacing cashier-less technology in Amazon Fresh stores with smart shopping carts
From NASDAQ: 2024-04-06 09:00:00
In February 2020, Amazon introduced a cashier-less grocery store using “Just Walk Out” technology, allowing shoppers to pay automatically through sensors and cameras. However, recent reports indicate Amazon is shifting towards a more consumer-friendly version of the technology, addressing concerns about not knowing the bill in real-time.
The Just Walk Out technology still works and will remain in Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores in the UK, but will be removed from the Amazon Fresh chain. Amazon is now focusing on smart shopping carts that display up-to-date bills as shoppers add items, improving the consumer experience.
While the innovation may not significantly impact Amazon’s massive business, investors should focus on growth areas like digital advertising and Amazon Web Services. Amazon’s cashless stores have potential, but the company’s existing segments contribute significantly to revenue and operating income, driving long-term value for shareholders.
