Netflix (NFLX) Streams Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume in 169 Countries

Netflix released the animated movie Suzume, directed by Makoto Shinkai, in 169 countries on Apr 6. The film is about a high school student, Suzume Iwato, who joins forces with Souta Munakata to prevent disasters in Japan. Shares of Netflix have risen 30.7% this year, fueled by the success of its Japanese content.
In Japan, Netflix faces competition in the video-on-demand market from Amazon Prime Video, U-Next, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The SVOD market in Japan was valued at 505.4 billion yen in 2023, with consistent growth since 2020. Despite increased competition, Netflix remains the dominant player, with U-NEXT gaining ground.
Amazon acquired the series Acma: Game for streaming worldwide, while Netflix plans to release Japanese content like City Hunter and The Grimm Variations. Disney debuted its first Japanese anime series, The Fable, and Warner Bros. Discovery partnered with J:COM for content. Overall, the streaming market in Japan is growing, with Netflix aiming to boost its APAC revenues.
