Former Apple design lead Jony Ive and current OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are seeking funding for a new AI-powered personal device. The duo has been working on plans since fall 2023, aiming to raise at least $1 billion. Investors in talks include Thrive Capital, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and Emerson Collective.

Ive’s experience in personal devices from Apple and Altman’s AI background from OpenAI and ChatGPT are driving the new venture. The device is rumored to not resemble a smartphone.
